Everything You Wanted to Know About Henna Brows

We’re living in the best era for eyebrows. From microblading to brow lamination, there are so many brow modification enhancements that fit varying needs and preferences. When it comes to eyebrow tinting, henna brows are a brilliant approach to semi-permanent brow tinting that’s suitable for all skin types.

What are henna brows?

The esthetics and cosmetics industries are forever shifting. And as we move toward more skin and environmentally-friendly products, we find new ways to innovate some of our favorite processes. Henna brows involve a type of brow tinting that stains the skin, leaving tinted hairs for up to six weeks, and tinted skin lasting anywhere from 2 to 10 days.

How do henna brows compare to other brow tints?

Brow henna varies from brow tinting in that it stains the skin for a more extended period of time. Other brow tinting methods, while a semi-permanent solution, only lasts up to 1 to 3 days on the skin and 2 to 3 weeks on the brow.

The benefits of a henna brow tint

You might know henna as the traditional powder leaves of the tropical shrub used to decorate the body and dye hair. This vegan, plant-based, natural dye is allergy friendly and long-lasting. In some cases, it lasts twice as long as traditional eyebrow enhancements. You can expect a pain-free application and incredible enhancements to shape and definition of your brows.

The cons of henna brows

There are of course pros and cons for every type of brow treatment. With henna, the application is exact, which makes it a little more difficult. It also struggles to “take” on all hair types, so depending on how fine your brow hair is, you may find yourself with a shorter tint lifespan. If you are worried about your sensitive skin, you and your technician can perform a patch test prior to your session.

The process of getting a henna brow treatment

Getting any procedure done that’s even semi-permanent might make even the calmest person a little anxious. The process of getting a henna brow treatment couldn’t be more approachable. And at the end, you’re left with a stunning set of brows that highlight your facial features.

How you should prepare for a henna brow appointment

Your esthetician will be glad to hear you read this article prior to your appointment! In addition to aftercare, being prepared is half the battle. You can prepare for your henna brow appointment by making sure your face is washed and clear of oily skin and debris. Try to avoid getting a sunburn or being in pain in general in the brow area.

Steps to the eyebrow treatment

During your eyebrow treatment, your brow specialist will begin with brow shaping via threading, a brow wax, or tweezing. Once your technician achieves your desired shape, they will gently exfoliate and create a smoother surface for even color distribution. If it’s dark brown, you want it to look dark brown. Your technician will outline your brows in the shape that feels most like you, and you can adjust angles and thickness as you go.

Your technician will mix the henna powder with water to activate it and use an angled brush to apply the henna to your brows. You’ll feel some light pressure to ensure that the henna penetrates the skin under your brows. After around a 10 to 20 minute wait, allowing your brows to set in, the henna is removed to show off your new brows.

Caring for your henna brows

Extending the lifespan of your henna brows includes avoiding exfoliants or actives like AHAs near your brows. The last thing you want is for those products to strip away the dye. Gentle cleansers and SPF are your friends. Be sure to avoid rubbing on your eyebrows and refrain from using make-up remover within 24 hours of your appointment. Give oil-free makeup remover a shot after the 24-hour mark is up. These first 24 hours are crucial, so staying away from swimming, direct sun exposure, over washing, and water contact on your brows is essential.
